Dr. John Watson, president and CEO of CARE Canada, will examine the future of aid in an increasingly competitive world market in a speech to the Rotary Club of Calgary on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

His speech will address complex development issues around the globe, including a look at an innovative and relatively new approach to international aid: mixing business sense with development.

CARE's recently established branch, CARE Enterprise Partners (CEP), uses traditional business tools in its approach to aid - venture funds, technical assistance, loans and training - to help entrepreneurs and local farmers enter the formal economy. The goal is to encourage independence and allow people to help themselves through their own business sense and hard work.

"Small business-owners across Canada know how challenging it can be to kick start a business and to ensure its success," says Dr. Watson. "Consider the uphill battle faced by entrepreneurs in the developing world who have the skill and the know-how to contribute to their local economy, but simply lack the basic resources to see their vision realized."

Dr. Watson has been with CARE Canada since 1987 and president since 2001. He has been the driving force behind the modernization and restructuring of CARE Canada and the CARE International network. Under his leadership the value of CARE's programmes have grown from $11 million (1985) to more than $106 million.

The Rotary Club of Calgary is one of the oldest and largest in Canada. Chartered in 1914, the Club currently has more than 300 members. The Rotary Club of Calgary is a service club devoted to providing support for Calgary community agencies and charities as well as international initiatives in aid and development.
