Local Author's Debut Novel Man & Other Natural Disasters Garners Surprising Support

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 1, 2011) - Before it even came off the press, Nerys Parry's debut novel, Man & Other Natural Disasters was making waves. A finalist for the Colophon Prize, Parry's novel tied for seventh out of more than 130 books in the inaugural 2011 Giller Prize Reader's Choice Award contest. "I honestly didn't expect such strong support," Parry says, adding that she did little to promote the award other than a few emails and Facebook posts. "It was humbling, and inspiring."

Now Parry, who grew up in Kanata, will be counting on continuing hometown support as she spends the next month promoting her novel at venues across the city, including:

  • "3 Women, 3 Books" at the Library and Archives Canada, on November 9th 7:30 pm
  • "An Intimate Reading" at Collected Works Bookstore in Westborough on November 10th at 7:00 pm
  • "Words with Weight: preserving our books and resurrecting our stories" at the main branch of the Ottawa Public Library on November 17th at 7:00 pm
  • "Mill Street Reading" in Almonte on November 24th.

It's a full schedule, Parry admits, but "connecting with readers is why I write, it's what makes all the work worthwhile".
