Local Business Leader, UST Global, Launches STEM Initiative 'Step IT Up America' in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwired - April 02, 2014) - UST Global, an Aliso Viejo based information technology solutions and services company for Global 1000 enterprises, on Friday March 28th launched in Los Angeles, 'Step IT Up America,' a nationwide Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative to train and hire 1,000 minority women by the end of 2014. Along with the launch, Los Angeles welcomed several women participating in the program as well as a program mentor.

Two members from the most recent class launch in Atlanta, GA spoke about their training thus far in the program. April Blount and Jaleesa Carter heard about Step IT Up and felt it was the perfect opportunity to make a change in their lives. April, a mother of 3 had previously spend 13 years in the public education system as an administrative assistant when she found out about Step IT Up America. Her goal is to empower women to take this opportunity to change their lives. She explained that if you have the passion, zeal and determination, you too can do this.

"Step IT Up America is something that I think a lot of women can take advantage of," said April. "When I first started, I was nervous about the work I thought, yes I'm here, but can I do it. Now I'm a peer leader to my class and am ready and willing to help anyone that needs it."

Jaleesa Carter, a recent graduate from Clark Atlanta University with a degree in political science left her teaching job to become a student once again. She said she wanted more of a challenge and was excited to step into this uncharted territory of IT. She said she misses teaching, but is learning something new which is taking her beyond heights she could have ever imagined.

Along with these trainees in attendance was also LaTrice Ross, a current coach and mentor for the women participating in the inaugural class in Atlanta, GA. LaTrice saw this opportunity and felt this job was custom made for her; she applied immediately. As a coach, LaTrice is responsible for providing developmental training and coaching the women on professionalism. This can be anything from how to dress, to interviewing skills, to career management. She also helps mentor the women as a friend on soft skills including emotional intelligence, how to study and business communication. LaTrice now supports 56 women in total, with 35 more joining at the end of the April.

"The demographic in LA today is representative of where the US will be in the next decade and as a LA based company, we understand the potential all underrepresented minority communities," said Sajan Pillai, CEO UST Global. "We also believe that technology is the only factor that will bring everyone to a level playing field. After our successful launch in Philly, Atlanta and Detroit, we are excited to see how women in our home city will seize this opportunity."

Step IT Up America is funded by UST Global and has already launched Atlanta, Philadelphia, Detroit and Los Angeles. As part of the Step IT Up America program, over 1000 women are trained in IT skills for 90 days followed by a technology job. So far, over 100 women have enrolled in training programs and there has been zero attrition. These women are paid higher than minimum wage during their training and are guaranteed a job after graduation.
