Local Ingredients to Be Showcased at Food Charity Event

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - July 11, 2007) - Exult in the bounty and superior flavor of locally grown ingredients on Wednesday evening, July 18 at a singular New York food and wine event, the 100 Mile Menu fete, benefiting two food focused organizations, The Sylvia Center and Just Food. While indulging in dishes made from ingredients sourced within a 100-mile radius of New York City, savor edu-taining interactive activities reflecting the evening's theme in the expansive kitchen of Great Performances, the prestigious caterer. All proceeds from the 100 Mile Menu celebration will be shared by The Sylvia Center and Just Food.

Activities will include:

Preserving with Classie Parker of Harlem's Five Star Garden

Wheat grinding with guidance from Al Earnhart from Lightning Tree Farm

Pickling under the tutelage of Rick Field of Rick's Picks

Shopping at a farmers' market created for the evening

Asking questions of Colin Beavan a.k.a. "No Impact Man"

Just Food makes fresh locally grown food available and accessible to all New Yorkers through education, training and connecting urban consumers, family farmers and community gardeners. The Sylvia Center is dedicated to educating at-risk urban children about healthy foods and nutrition through planting, harvesting and cooking on Great Performances' 60-acre Katchkie Farm in Columbia County, NY.

The evening's loca-vore orientation will extend to the libations too. Cocktails will be concocted with juice and purees made from local produce, while wines and beers will come from local producers. To assure the event boasts as small an environmental imprint as its menu's, all waste will be composted and any leftover prepared food or farmers' market items will be donated to City Harvest.

There are three ticket packages for the 100 Mile Menu celebratory evening ranging from $65 per person to $500 for two.

The benefit for Just Food and The Sylvia Center celebrating the 100 Mile Menu will make its mark on the New York events map on Wednesday, July 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Great Performances, 287 Spring Street.
