Local Politicians and Community Leaders Wash Cars to Help End Hunger

Splish Splash Charity Car Wash to fight poverty and homelessness

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Sept. 6, 2013) - Our Place is joining forces with MP's, MLA's, Mayors, Councillors from nine jurisdictions, police officers, local media personalities and several community groups and leaders to help end hunger. This Saturday, volunteers will be washing cars to raise money for the meal program and to raise awareness for Our Place. Local celebrities such as Marty the Marmot and Gordy Dodd will be on hand to help wash cars.

"The issue of hunger does not see Municipal boundaries, so I am very pleased that colleagues from other municipalities are coming out to assist me in the washing of cars!" says Charlayne Thornton-Joe, City of Victoria Councillor and Event Organizer. "The work of Our Place in the community is extremely important. It provides a basic, vital service to the most vulnerable citizens in our community - a place to gather and have a meal."

To show your support, bring your vehicle to the car wash (by donation) which will be held in the courtyard of the Our Place facility at 919 Pandora Avenue between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Refreshments and tours of Our Place will be available while cars are being washed by special guest volunteers from across the community.

"We believe it is fundamental in a healthy society to provide food for all those in need," says Don Evans, Executive Director of Our Place Society. "A simple service like having your car washed can have a direct impact in the community and in someone's life. We currently serve over 1200 meals a day and are extremely grateful for all the volunteers and community support that we receive."

In addition to Mayor Fortin, you will find many other well known people helping out, including Helen and Ted Hughes, Elizabeth May MP, Murray Rankin MP, Andrew Weaver MLA, Maurine Karigianis MLA, Carole James MLA and Mayor Nils Jensen.

Our Place is a community centre serving Greater Victoria's working poor, the impoverished elderly, individuals with mental health and physical challenges and the homeless. It provides 45 transitional housing units, over 1,200 meals per day, hot showers, free clothing, counseling and outreach services. Most importantly, it provides a sense of hope and belonging to our neighbours in need.
