Local Veteran Honoured for Service to Veterans

ST. MARY'S BAY, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwire - Nov. 21, 2009) - On behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, the Honourable Senator Fabian Manning presented Mr. Eugene Breen with the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation during a ceremony at Mr. Breen's home.

"Mr. Breen has served The Royal Canadian Legion and his community with remarkable determination and commitment," said Minister Thompson. "It is a pleasure to honour him on behalf of all Canadians."

Mr. Breen has been an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 32 years and received Life Membership in 1998. He was selected as a recipient of the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation for his service to the Veteran community, including his contributions to the bringing together of youth and Veterans.

"Eugene Breen is a strong advocate of Veterans," said Senator Manning. "His respect for, and commitment to the values and principles of the military are contagious."

The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation consists of a bar, which can be worn below official decorations on a Veteran's blazer, a lapel pin for civilian wear and a certificate.

It is presented to individuals who have contributed to the care and well-being of Veterans and to the remembrance of their contributions, sacrifices and achievements. It is intended primarily for Veterans, but in some circumstances may also be awarded to non-Veterans. Nominations may be submitted by the public at any time and are reviewed annually by an advisory committee.
