Local Volunteers Draw on North Canton Hotel's Hospitality for Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Project

Friends and Families Join Forces to Serve Home Cooked Thanksgiving Meal

NORTH CANTON, OH--(Marketwire - Nov 1, 2012) - Pooling resources for the purpose of providing families in need with a Thanksgiving dinner, dedicated volunteers through the assistance of donations and the use of facilities at one of the premier hotels near Akron, Ohio are embarking on their fifth annual Thanksgiving Dinner Project with expectations of providing 60 area families with everything needed for a home cooked holiday meal.

Assisting the local group of volunteers in their efforts, this will be the third year the Courtyard Canton has donated its spacious Grand Ballroom as the gathering point for donations, allowing the group to collect, process and distribute portions for the project that has grown significantly since its inception in 2008. As donations come in from restaurants, grocery stores, individuals, local businesses and Akron area hotels such as the Courtyard, that prepare the food for families in need, volunteers collate the food and disseminate portions that will provide each family with a home cooked meal.

While the Thanksgiving Dinner Project is a grass-roots effort of caring individuals in the community and not under the direction of any one local organization, many not-for-profit groups are involved in assisting in its success. The project, which was started by a group of friends and their families, has since grown into a larger group of friends and families who have involved some of the organizations to which they belong. As a result, each year the group feeds many families in conjunction with supporting organizations such as the Alliance for Families and Children, Domestic Violence Shelter, Pregnancy Support Center, Catholic Charities and many local churches. Several volunteers are also members of the Junior League and the local Community Betterment group.

In addition to serving local families, one of the primary goals of project volunteers is to expose their own children to the art of giving. Assembly Day activity inside the Courtyard sees volunteers relying heavily on the help of kids, who first assist with registration and running, and then once the North Canton hotel's ballroom is set-up, the young volunteers are put in charge of filling orders for specific families to ensure each receives everything on their list. Youth also assist in delivering meals to families or their respective agencies.
