Lockdown and Search at Edmonton Institution


EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Jan. 7, 2016) - Correctional Service Canada

On January 6, 2016, at about 8:31 p.m., a lockdown was put in place at Edmonton Institution, a maximum, security federal institution, to allow staff to conduct a search of the institution following an inmate assault..

The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

Visits have been suspended until the search is completed.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is committed to preventing the entry of contraband into its institutions. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will continue to review the circumstances surrounding this incident and take the appropriate measures.
