Lockdown and Search at Stony Mountain Institution

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwired - April 14, 2014) - Correctional Service Canada

On April 14, 2014, at about 1:30 p.m., a lockdown was put in place at the medium security unit of Stony Mountain Institution to allow staff to conduct a search of the institution following an inmate assault.

The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates. Visits have been suspended for the medium security unit until the search is completed.

The safety and security of institutions is CSC's primary concern. Regular activities in the medium security unit will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

Visitors who have already planned a visit to the medium security unit are asked to contact the institution directly.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will continue to review the circumstances surrounding this incident and take the appropriate measures.
