Lockheed Martin to Develop Automated System for Intelligence Analysts

CHERRY HILL, NJ--(Marketwire - Jun 23, 2011) - The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) a two-year, $13 million contract to develop InsightOS, a system designed to help analysts process and integrate battlefield information faster and more accurately than is possible today.

Analysts wade through volumes of disparate Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) data from sea, air, and land assets to produce an integrated view of critical information for the warfighter. It is difficult for analysts to easily share and integrate that data. Compounding the issue is a lack of effective visualization tools that support an understanding of the overall battlespace.

A multi-contractor Insight team will create an automated system for analysts that combines sensor and intelligence data from multiple assets, dynamically retasks assets as necessary, and incorporates analysts into the process via advanced Human-Computer Interaction tools. As a result, the fidelity and speed of battlefield analyses will improve, increasing mission success and warfighter safety.

Lockheed Martin's Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) will build InsightOS, an ISR operating system that will be the integrating framework for the Insight system. The framework will enable automatic data fusion from many assets, re-task assets based on intelligence needs, and reach back to remote ground stations for additional data. The system will seamlessly link advanced algorithms in fusion and exploitation, collection planning, and human interaction with simulated or live assets. ATL will also create and support a sophisticated computing environment to host Insight as well as build a searchable data archive to capture all source data and fused products.

ATL's teammates include Autonomous Systems, a unit of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control; Object Video; and Georgia Tech Research Institute.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 126,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation's 2010 sales from continuing operations were $45.8 billion.
