Loders Croklaan Innovation Drives Trans-Fat Elimination

Zero-Trans Product Offerings Provide the Path to Eliminate Trans-Fat

CHANNAHON, IL--(Marketwire - March 23, 2011) - The food industry is under renewed pressure from the market to eliminate trans-fat from food products. State and local governments, retailers and specific segments of the market continue to set mandates requiring the complete elimination of trans-fat from food products.

Responding to industry demands, Loders Croklaan, a leading innovator of edible fats and oils, continues to develop and commercialize healthy products that eliminate trans-fat and hydrogenation from foods while maintaining lower saturated fat levels in the finished product. These innovations help customers develop products that are in-line with the government's Dietary Guidelines.

Two new products illustrate Loders Croklaan's commitment to offering highly functional solutions while meeting the challenge of balancing function, nutrition, and cost optimization.

SansTrans™ VLS 30, an all-purpose shortening, is designed to offer a 30% reduction in saturated fat without increasing the annual shortening spend.

SansTrans™ VLS 40 emulsified shortening offers formulators with the ability to reduce saturated fat up to 15% AND decrease the annual shortening cost by up to 10% annually. Both SansTrans 30 and SansTrans 40 are specifically designed to be ideal solutions for cookie, cake, and muffin applications.

In addition to saturated fat reduction, SansTrans 30 and SansTrans 40 products improve the overall nutritional profile by reducing total fat and total calories from fat; both key attributes when formulating products to meet today's governmental Dietary Guidelines.

"The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans states that trans-fatty acid consumption should be as low as possible and to try to avoid foods that contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oil," said Gerald McNeill, PhD, Vice-President of R&D at Loders Croklaan. "Although Saturated Fat is a healthy alternative to trans-fats where a solid fat is needed for functionality, SansTans VLS 30 and 40 offers the user a further benefit of lower saturated fat and reduced annual shortening cost."
