Londoners take their message to the Labour party conference

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 12, 2007) - Hundreds of trade union members from London will be descending on Bournemouth for the Labour party conference (23rd September) to call for more affordable housing, better public services and stronger employment rights.
Unite, the UK's biggest union, has organised a massive demonstration to send a 'message to Labour' at Gordon Brown's first Labour party conference as leader.

London Region, Unite Regional Secretary, Steve Hart said

"Hundreds of workers from London will be gathering in Bournemouth to send a clear message to the Labour government that they need more affordable housing, high quality public services and stronger employment protection.

"Our members are working people with genuine concerns. They are spread across every industry and public service, every income group, every educational and skills background. Labour needs to listen and stake its ground as the party for working people if it is to win the next election."

London based workers from the public sector, construction, transport, manufacturing, graphics industries and financial service industries will be in Bournemouth calling for an end to wasteful bureaucracy and fragmented services in the public sector. There will also be call for a new housing agenda as key workers can no longer afford even the most modest home in London.

Construction workers and many migrant workers from across London are being coerced into agency employment. Unite is calling on the government to introduce legislation to give equal rights to temporary and agency workers and to honour its commitment to support the European Directive for temporary and agency workers.

Unite is also calling on the government to strengthen UK manufacturing with laws to protect and support the UK's manufacturing industry.
