Long Island Heart Associates' LightSpeed VCT Performs Calcium Score Readings With 40 Percent Less Radiation

MINEOLA, NY--(Marketwired - Jul 1, 2015) - A calcium score reading, also known as a coronary calcium scan, is done through a CT scanner, and reports the amount of calcium in the plaque on the walls of coronary arteries. The test checks for heart disease in its early stages and predicts the risk for a heart attack.

N.Y. cardiology practice Long Island Heart Associates (LI Heart) technicians and cardiologists perform calcium score readings with the practice's LightSpeed VCT made by GE Healthcare. The new generation CT machine performs very fast readings with 40 percent less radiation than typical CT scanners. Currently, LI Heart is the only private practice using the LightSpeed VCT, and confirms that the scanner produces accurate early detection of internal abnormalities.

Calcium score readings done through CT scans are clear indicators of heart disease risk. LI Heart cardiologists conclude that a calcium score of zero indicates no coronary artery disease and virtually no risk of a future heart attack. As the calcium score rises, heart attack risk increases. The risk can be minimized, so it is important to access risk factors for prevention.

LI Heart prides itself in the accuracy of calcium score readings. A 50-year-old executive marathon runner with normal cholesterol levels and no other risk factors, was referred to LI Heart for a calcium score screening as part of his executive health evaluation. The results were unexpected. His calcium score was more than 300, which put him at high risk for a future cardiac event. This patient required preventive medication and subsequent stenting of a tight coronary artery blockage. LI Heart's simple screening test, which took less than 5 minutes, potentially saved the life of this father of four.

Typically, the test is for men over 40 and women over 50. But, anyone can benefit from the screening.

LI Heart is a cardiology practice with six locations in Long Island and Queens: Mineola, Manhasset, Kew Gardens, Woodmere, Bellmore, and Great Neck. LI Heart physicians are board-certified in cardiovascular diseases, echo-cardiology, nuclear cardiology, interventional cardiology, and electrophysiology.
