Long Weekend Safety Tips: CAA North & East Ontario Encourages Motorists to Drive Safely This Holiday Weekend

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 19, 2010) - For many Canadians, the Victoria Day Weekend represents our first chance to savour some warm weather and hit the open road this year. If you're one of the millions of Canadian motorists who plan on travelling this long weekend, CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) would like to remind you to exercise caution and care while on the road.

"CAA North & East Ontario is committed to promoting safe driving practices in our region and across Canada," said Korey Kennedy, Manager of Public & Government Affairs for CAANEO. "The long weekend is a perfect occasion to remind motorists that safety never takes a vacation."

In their continuing effort to promote safer roads and highways for all motorists, CAANEO has several helpful tips for staying safe on the busy roads this holiday weekend.

  • As with any other time of year, staying calm and applying safe driving practices are the best ways to avoid collisions and keep you and your passengers safe. Avoid speeding, tailgating, sudden braking or accelerating, and try to limit any distractions while driving.
  • Always familiarize yourself with your route before departing, or, if you are uncertain of your route, be sure to budget extra time to travel to your destination.
  • When you're packing your car for a weekend getaway, make sure any camping or outdoor equipment is securely tied down. If anything should come loose, you will be liable for any damage done to other cars on the roadway and will be subject to fines under the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Remove all non-essential items from your trunk, as excess weight can greatly increase your vehicle's fuel consumption. Ensure that none of your gear is blocking your view of the road and drive slowly if you are carrying a lot more baggage than usual, as stopping times can be greatly increased by added weight.
  • Use common sense; never drink and drive. If you're planning on having a few drinks at a cottage, barbeque or get together this weekend, make sure to designate a driver or plan to take a cab or public transportation home.

By exercising caution, staying focused, and being mindful of everybody on the road, you can ensure that you and your passengers will travel safely this weekend. CAA North & East Ontario is committed to promoting safe and responsible driving habits on roads and highways throughout the region and across Canada.
