Longmeadow Dentist Reminds Public About Benefits of Sleep Apnea Devices

LONGMEADOW, MA--(Marketwired - January 31, 2015) - A new study has found that sleep apnea devices can not only cure fatigue but also lower depression.

Dr. Jim Dores, owner of Dental Dental, said a story by Reuters on the recent study ( highlights the far-reaching effects of sleep apnea and sleep apnea treatments. Dr. Dores offers sleep apnea devices at his Longmeadow, Mass., office in addition to preventative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry. Physicians have linked sleep apnea and depression because sleep problems are known to cause restlessness, fatigue, irritability and lower quality of life.

The article cites a review that found those who wore a nightly device for obstructive sleep apnea improved in their depression. The review tested 19 patients who either used a CPAP machine or a mouthguard that moves the tongue and lower jawbone forward. Study subjects who wore the devices were more likely to show improvements in their depression compared with those who did not.

Dr. Dores said the findings show how sleep apnea treatment can change a patient's life. Dr. Dores added that the treatments are generally covered by dental insurance plans.

"So often we only view sleep apnea as loud snoring, but it's so much more than that -- and it actually can be deadly if left untreated," Dr. Dores said. "The great thing about our sleep apnea treatments is patients have instant results. After using the device for just one night, they wake up the next day feeling refreshed and well-rested."
