Look out below!-Future Engineers Compete in the 2009 NRC Engineering Challenge

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 27, 2009) - Elementary students from Ecole elementaire catholique Arc-en-ciel won first place in this year's NRC Engineering Challenge - beating out over 70 classes from the Eastern Ontario region. Teams from Pope John XXIII Catholic Elementary School and Osgoode Public School came in second and third respectively.

Over the course of the last month, volunteer engineers from NRC and 13 regional organizations have mentored more than 2,000 students (grades 5-7) in the National Capital Region. The student teams have been working to solve a real-life problem: how to drop aid supplies from an aircraft to survivors in regions devastated by natural disasters. They have simulated this scenario by designing, constructing and testing an innovative engineering prototype to protect an egg (cargo), then down a ramp and falls to a target 1.75 metres (6 feet) below.

The best student teams converged today at the Canada Museum of Science and Technology to compete for top honours.

"Engaging Canada's youth in activities that promote science and engineering plays a role in developing the next generation of researchers," said the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology).

By promoting science to youth, NRC helps support the Government of Canada's strategy, Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada's Advantage, to create a competitive advantage for our country based on excellence in science and technology and encourages young Canadians to choose careers in these fields.

"NRC is proud to support these young potential engineers by sharing our pool of expertise" says NRC President Dr. Pierre Coulombe "By participating in programs such as NRC's Engineering Challenge, students not only build real-life connections to the benefits of science and technology for our society, but come to realize that science is rewarding and fun."

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) is a leader in the development of an innovative, knowledge-based economy for Canada through science and technology.
