Los Angeles Area Dentist Now Uses L-PRF to Enhance Bone Grafting Procedures

Bone Grafting With Leukocyte Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) Helps Michael Fulbright, DDS Quickly and Effectively Create a Better Foundation for Dental Implant Placement

REDONDO BEACH, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 24, 2015) - Largely due to their long-term durability and natural-looking results, dental implants are one of the most highly sought tooth restorations available, states Dr. Michael Fulbright, a cosmetic and reconstructive dentist in Redondo Beach. Unfortunately, he continues, not every individual seeking this restorative treatment is considered a good candidate. In addition to having reasonably healthy gum tissues as well as no medical conditions that can affect proper healing after surgery, prospective patients must possess enough jawbone structure and density to adequately support the dental implants once they are placed.

For individuals who do not have a sufficient amount of jawbone density, Dr. Fulbright says an advanced technique known as bone grafting can many times be used to help stimulate bone regeneration for improved jawbone solidity. To enhance this treatment process, he now utilizes all-natural leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) matrices that can potentially help produce better quality bone, as well as increase the rate at which the jawbone heals following the procedure.

According to a recent blog post regarding how L-PRF is used, Dr. Fulbright first draws a small amount of the patient's blood and distributes it between two to four vials. These vials are then placed into a centrifuge (developed by Intra-Lock® International) that spins them rapidly at a particular angulation until a condensed clot of fibrin is separated from all other elements. "Once independent, the clotted fibrin is placed into an Xpression™ Box -- also developed by Intra-Lock® International -- and flattened until all excess serum is squeezed out, effectively leaving a condensed, thin matrix of platelet-rich fibrin."

The entry goes on to note that this L-PRF matrix can then be dipped into a solution of grafting material and excess serum collected from the Xpression™ Box to garner additional healing elements. Once prepared, the bone grafting material and L-PRF matrix are both carefully placed into the treatment area, effectively helping to encourage the regeneration of bone tissue around the graft for enhanced jawbone structure and durability.

Leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin is both biocompatible and holistic, and Dr. Fulbright states that utilizing L-PRF during bone grafting procedures can often significantly expedite the healing process while ultimately helping to achieve an ideal foundation for the placement and long-term success of dental implants.
