Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel Addresses the City's Recovery

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - February 9, 2010) - The Honorable Wendy Greuel, Controller, City of Los Angeles, will outline the city's recovery in "Back to Basics: How Los Angeles Recovers" to TOWN HALL Los Angeles on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel.

On January 26, 2010, Greuel stated, "The city of Los Angeles must act decisively, it must act effectively, and it must act quickly if it is to survive the current financial crisis. This means a real evaluation of LA's bankruptcy options, a real review of LA's pension scheme and a real analysis to LA's commitment to the delivery of services and a systemic reorganization that ensures that LA has a future as a great city."

Greuel endorses a proposed November 2010 California ballot initiative barring the state from taking local government funds to balance its budget, "I have said that the federal government likes to print money and the state likes to steal it, while we at the local level have to deliver services."

Prior to being sworn in as City Controller of Los Angeles on July 1, 2009, Greuel served for seven years as a Los Angeles City Councilmember representing the Second District in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. During that time, she also served as Vice-Chair of the Budget Committee and as a member of the Audits and Government Efficiency Committee. Greuel has sought to reduce the influence of money on the political process by banning city commissioners from fundraising.

The Los Angeles City Controller's office is responsible for budgetary control of all city funds as authorized by ordinance, pre and post-audit approval and release of city funds, and reconciliation against city checks issued and paid.
