Los Angeles County Museum of Art Employs VeriWave Test System to Pre-Qualify Wireless Campus Network

PORTLAND, OR--(Marketwire - December 15, 2008) - Before rolling out its new state-of-the-art wireless campus network, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) pre-tested end-users' Quality of Experience (QoE) by using VeriWave's wireless test platforms to create and measure network and application performance. LACMA's new campus-wide Wireless LAN (WLAN) updates and expands its communications infrastructure to give both employees and visitors greater mobility and access to information resources. By enabling network architects to generate and test actual traffic patterns, VeriWave's test solutions helped the museum make informed decisions about vendor selection and network design.

LACMA embarked on a multi-year "Transformation Project" in 2004 that includes creating dynamic new spaces and new ways to experience the more than 100,000 works in its collections. The project introduces modern concepts of experiencing art by enhancing the interaction between visitors and exhibits, including providing visitors with free WiFi-enabled "PDAs" featuring pre-loaded multimedia tours, and information that can be download from www.lacma.org to their own PDAs and smart-phones. Visitors are also able to access the museum public WiFi network utilizing hot-spots throughout the campus. Museum employees also benefit from increased mobility and high-quality communications as the museum already has an established Laptop, PDA and Smartphone system for its staff.

The new wireless network overlays and begins the restructuring of LACMA's existing corporate network. In making critical planning decisions, LACMA decided to compare the performance of two competing WLAN solutions using VeriWave's test system to conduct comprehensive tests that recreated the network and its user traffic. Peter Bodell, LACMA's Chief Information Office, says tests performed using VeriWave's equipment helped LACMA optimize network design and choose the best solution for its usage model which includes some 300 Access Points (APs).

"Our goal is to create personalized educational experiences for our visitors, and an open, mobile, no-walls work environment that lets our employees, docents and volunteers work efficiently almost anywhere on the campus," says Mr. Bodell. "Selecting the right infrastructure equipment was absolutely critical so we decided to conduct comparative testing between two leading systems. We wanted to create a test bed that would subject a real network to the actual traffic loads and mixes we expect. That part of the vendor selection process was easy since VeriWave's WiFi Traffic Generator / Analyzer is the only means of conducting the kind of in-depth, repeatable tests we wanted to run."

The testing conducted by LACMA features VeriWave's traffic generator and analyzer as well as its WiMix™ Real-World Deployment Test programs. WiMix loads the network under test with an enterprise's precise traffic mix and reports on end-user "Quality of Experience" (QoE). The traffic mix being measured for LACMA includes WiFi-enabled:

--  Smartphones, PDAs and Laptops brought on campus by the visitors that
    can access the internet from wireless "hotspots" throughout the campus;
--  PDAs pre-loaded with multimedia tours provided free to the visitors
    that extend the gallery experience to a visitor's personalized "My LACMA"
    account at www.LACMA.org;
--  Mobile computing technologies used by museum employees to access the
    corporate network;
--  Smartcards and SmartTickets and RFID Technology which will later be
    used in concert with LACMA's Membership, Ticketing, Collections Management,
    and Access control systems.
