Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and Los Angeles City Fire Department Launch New Website Connecting the Community and Its First Responders

Website Refresh Made Possible Through Private Donations From the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwired - Sep 12, 2014) - The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, the major source of private support for the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), and the LAFD today announced the launch of a state of the art website (www.lafd.org). The new website will provide Angelenos with clear information about their local fire stations, and will benefit businesses and community members with easier access to city permits and regulations.

Found at www.lafd.org, the website boasts a modern look and feel, is mobile and tablet-friendly, is ADA-compliant to meet new city mandates, and bundles many sites previously serving the department into one. The website is a full-service resource for community updates, linking visitors to the LAFD's social media sites for the breaking news, as well as an information source for fire safety tips, local events and ways to volunteer and get involved with the community. This is the soft launch, and new features will be added in the coming months including an intranet which will help the department communicate better internally, linking communication across stations and LAFD units throughout the city.

"In recent years, the bulk of our funding has gone directly to the front lines for necessary equipment and personnel to keep our community safe," said Fire Chief Ralph M. Terrazas. "It is only through the generous donation from the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and their funders that we now have a website representative of the great city we serve."

As one of the largest fire departments in the nation, the LAFD strives to provide the finest fire, rescue and emergency medical services to the residents and visitors of the City of Los Angeles. Keeping them informed online is an integral part of achieving this goal. Also, the new site complies with the legally mandated federal Section 508 policies for web accessibility. Further enhancements to the site will continue, so visitors are encouraged to check back often at www.lafd.org.

The more than $250,000 website project was funded entirely by the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, which picks up where the city budget leaves off in providing equipment, training, technology and additional support and resources to the Department.

"The Foundation recently purchased and donated 3,200 brush fire helmets to our brave firefighters, but we can't forget some of the other basics the Department needs," said Karen Wagener, LAFD Foundation President. "Communication is a vital part of a successful community. This new site allows for easier two-way communication directly with the community, both as a resource and through social media. Furthermore, it enhances the communication within the LAFD. It has been over six years since the website has been updated, so this is a big step in the digital realm for the Department, and one we are honored to be a part of."
