Los Angeles Tribute to Greta Garbo Highlights Swedish Lifestyle Month

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 4, 2005 -- The Consulate General of Sweden's "Beyond Blond" Swedish Lifestyle Month is featuring a tribute to Swedish film icon Greta Garbo this month, kicked off by a celebration of her 100th birthday on Thursday, April 7 at 8 pm, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The event, which will be held in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, will be hosted by Academy Award-nominated actress Lena Olin. The evening will include a clip show and presentations by actress Joan Leslie and authors Gore Vidal and Gavin Lambert, all of whom knew Garbo.

The evening precedes an April 8 - 24 retrospective of some of Garbo's most important work, organized by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. Among the films to be featured are: "THE LEGEND OF GÖSTA BERLING," "THE TORRENT," "FLESH AND THE DEVIL," "THE DIVINE WOMAN," "ANNA CHRISTIE," "MATA HARI," "QUEEN CHRISTINA," "ANNA KARENINA," "TWO-FACED WOMAN," "SUSAN LENOX (HER FALL AND RISE)," "GRAND HOTEL," "CAMILLE," and her first comedy, "NINOTCHKA." The retrospective will be held at UCLA's James Bridges Theater.

"This centenary celebration comes at a time when Sweden is enjoying an international revival of interest in Swedish films and the work of talented upcoming Swedish filmmakers.
