Los Angeles World Airports Sponsors Local Basketball Tournament to Kickoff Season

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 31, 2005 -- With the anticipation of another exciting NBA season, local athletes are itching to get back on the court. From Nov. 25-27, over 400 basketball players from the Los Angeles area are expected to participate in the Second LAX West Coast Classic sponsored by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and the Independent All-Stars Athletic Association (IASAA). Boys, ages 10-14, will gather to compete in a three-day tournament at local area high schools, yet to be determined.

Play will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 25 and will continue through Sunday, Nov. 27. Admission is $5 per person, with children under 5 admitted free.

"Southern California has so many talented athletes. We have been trying to bring a competitive tournament to this area," said the program's director, Thaddeus McGrew. "With LAWA's support, we have been able to make this dream a reality. This tournament gives these young athletes an opportunity to showcase their skills and play for local team supremacy."

McGrew is still looking for teams that want to compete in the tournament. If you or your team is interested, please contact him at (310) 916-3585 or by email at

"Our program allows us to involve kids from the inner city, providing them with a positive experience. We can help all of these kids improve their basketball skills, build their self-esteem and keep them out of trouble," said McGrew.

"We are grateful for the support we've received from LAWA and the surrounding community," said McGrew. "Without the help of local agencies, these kids would be without assistance that helps them to live their dreams and participate in a sport that they truly love. Basketball has been a positive outlet for them and may help them to one day get to college and beyond."

In addition to providing a facility for play, the tournament also provides a venue for Los Angeles World Airports to inform airport-area communities about its many community outreach programs, including the summer Aviation Careers Education Academy, which introduces middle and high school students to careers in aviation; and the LAXceptional Students program, which rewards students in local schools for outstanding achievement.

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, sports organizations in the United States.
