Louisiana's Stormwater Experts Gather to Fight Water Pollution

Wal-Mart and Others Seek Solutions for Meeting EPA Regulations at StormCon

SANTA BARBARA, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- June 29, 2005 -- The future of water pollution prevention is John Sansalone, a Louisiana State University civil engineering professor. His research problem is rain -- what it carries into storm drains, and how to filter it. Public works officials, engineers, and construction and industry professionals look for leading edge solutions to stormwater pollution at StormCon, the nation's largest stormwater conference, held July 18-21, 2005, at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes hotel in Orlando, FL. StormCon is expected to draw 1,000 municipal and government officials, consultants, and executives and environmental professionals from some of the nation's leading companies and organizations, including Wal-Mart, Alcoa, Koch Industries, KB Home, Washington Group International, Vulcan Materials Company, URS Corporation, Target Corporation, Lennar Homes Inc., Brown and Caldwell, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Over 175 vendors and service providers will exhibit stormwater-related equipment.

Stormwater pollution is regulated under the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting program. Louisiana's NPDES permit program is administered through the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources. Violators of NPDES permit requirements receive heavy fines and stop work orders.

Dr. John C. Ogden will deliver the opening keynote address. Dr. Ogden is director of the Florida Institute of Oceanography and biology professor at the University of South Florida. He has conducted extensive fieldwork on global coral reefs and ecosystems, and contributes to ocean policymaking.
