Lumenos Serves Up New Concept: Dinner and Healthy Ideas

Consumer-Driven Health Pioneer Finds Consumers Have an Appetite for Exchanging Healthy Ideas

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 15, 2005 -- Groups of health care consumers gathered in two cities for dinners hosted by Lumenos, a pioneer and market leader in the rapidly growing consumer-driven health care industry. The events drew employees that are enrolled in Lumenos from the Washington, DC area and from the Dallas area.

The events offered opportunities for Lumenos to share health information with consumers while also gathering ideas from them. After dinner, guests discussed suggestions for health improvement initiatives that Lumenos could add to its health plans. And at the end of the evening, awards were given to consumers that came up with the best ideas.

"We're a consumer-driven health care company," said Doug Kronenberg, chief strategy officer of Lumenos. "Our goal is to find ways to help consumers create healthier outcomes for themselves and their families. What better way to do that than by speaking directly with them."

Guests also enjoyed presentations by Michael Parkinson, M.D., M.P.H., executive vice president and chief health and medical officer of Lumenos, titled "Live Longer, Live Healthier." Dr. Parkinson examined the seven choices people must make to lead healthier lives as well as provided comparisons between the state of health care in Colonial times and health care today. For instance, he pointed out that while infectious diseases no longer kill as many Americans, they've been replaced by lifestyle-related -- and therefore preventable -- diseases, such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

A brief evaluation distributed to consumers at the end of the evening showed they were excited to have the opportunity to meet directly with their health plan and felt they came away with greater knowledge -- both from Dr. Parkinson's presentation and as a result of interacting with other consumers.

Dr. Parkinson, who is also president-elect of the American College of Preventive Medicine, said, "It's gratifying that consumers are so interested in taking advantage of tools and services that can help them do more for their health. And now they're even helping us develop more ideas for health-related tools and services -- ideas that can help Lumenos' consumers and can help make Lumenos health plans even more attractive to new consumers. It's a positive development for health care."

"For the very first time, a health plan actually listened to what I had to say," said Janet Hill, a Lumenos consumer who attended the Washington, DC dinner. "Plus, after talking with other consumers at the event, I realized I'm underutilizing the tools and services Lumenos provides. It got me excited; I want to start taking greater advantage of my plan."
