Lung Cancer Caring Ambassadors Program Commemorates Lung Cancer Awareness Month With Atlanta Run & Walk

ATLANTA, GA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 16, 2005 -- The Lung Cancer Caring Ambassadors Program (LCCAP) proudly announces the success of the 1st Annual Lung Cancer Awareness 2005 Run & Walk sponsored by LCCAP and Saint Joseph's Hospital on November 12, 2005. The event, which featured a 5K fun run/walk, expo, and children's activities, was the first such lung cancer event in the Atlanta area and marked the national observance Lung Cancer Awareness month. The theme of the Lung Cancer Awareness 2005 Run & Walk was, "Every Breath and Every Step Count." The goals of the event were to provide support for people living with lung cancer and their families, to educate the public about lung cancer risk factors, prevention, and early detection, and to advocate for improved lung cancer survivorship and research.

Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer of American men and women. Each year, lung cancer takes the lives of more Americans that breast, colon, and prostate cancer combined. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 172,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005 with more than 163,000 lung cancer deaths. Lung cancer claims the lives of nearly 20 people every hour of every day in the U.S. Globally, more than 1.1 million people die each year of lung cancer.

"The Lung Cancer Awareness 2005 Run & Walk was an important means of educating the public about lung cancer and bringing attention to a disease that suffers from the stigma of smoking. Early detection and education about warning signs are paramount to reduce the burden of lung cancer," said Maggie Riley, Director of the Center for Cancer Care and Research at Saint Joseph's Hospital.

"I am inspired by all the participants, volunteers, sponsors, and contributors doing their part in the fight against lung cancer. We are all in this together, and together we can make a difference in the lives of people afflicted with lung cancer. LCCAP will be here every November to raise lung cancer awareness and support lung cancer survivors," said Tom Simon, manager of the Lung Cancer Caring Ambassadors Program.
