LynuxWorks and Communications Research Centre Join Forces to Deliver New Development Environment for Software Defined Radio Systems

CRC's SCARI++ Core Framework to Be Added to LynxOS Real-Time Embedded Operating System

SAN JOSE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 14, 2006 -- LynuxWorks™ Inc., a leading supplier of embedded operating systems, and the Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC), developer of the world-renowned SCARI Software Suite, today announced a partnership that will offer the embedded systems industry a powerful component-based development and runtime environment for software defined radio (SDR) applications, allowing developers to shift from hardware-centric proprietary radios to software-controlled, reprogrammable, standards-based radios that offer maximum flexibility and value.

Scheduled for release early next year, the partnership will result in the integration of LynuxWorks' LynxOS®, the only hard, real-time operating system with broad conformance to open standards such as Linux™, POSIX® and Unix®, with the CRC's SCARI Software Suite. By providing a top-quality Component-Based Development (CBD) environment, the companies will enable developers to take advantage of software-controlled radios that are able to be reconfigured to switch among different channel frequencies or communications protocols and support the "triple play" in communications -- voice, data and video. This new environment also will be ideal for use in other embedded systems markets, such as avionics, automobile and consumer electronics industries.

The SCARI Software Suite is a complete Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for SDR. It includes an implementation of the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) Core Framework, as specified by the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as a set of tools to simplify the SCA development life cycle. The tools provide intuitive templates and automatically generate the required code to transform the signal processing components into SCA enabled ones. Run-time monitoring tools are also provided to inspect the radio and software deployment.

A foundational technology, the SCARI Core Framework uses ORBexpress, a real-time Object Request Broker (ORB) from Objective Interface Systems, as the communications backbone.
