M. Bradford Henley, MD, MBA, Appointed Secretary of Academy Board of Specialty Societies


SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - March 7, 2008) - The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) recently appointed M. Bradford Henley, MD, MBA, as Secretary of its Board of Specialty Societies (BOS). The announcement was made during the AAOS 75th Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

"My appointment as Secretary is a great honor," Dr. Henley said. "The BOS philosophy is about promoting unity among the specialty societies through education, communication and collaboration. I'm glad to be extending my passion for teaching into this prestigious organization."

A renowned teacher of orthopaedic traumatology, Dr. Henley is the recipient of the Harborview Medical Center Faculty Teaching Award and the Academic Faculty Teaching Award from the University of Washington. In addition to accepting invitations to various universities, he has taught nationally and internationally, as well as moderated and spoken on a variety of orthopaedic trauma topics at some the most prestigious symposia on orthopaedics in the world. He is also an expert on medical/orthopaedic economics and CPT/ICD-9 coding.

Dr. Henley is an active member of nearly two-dozen professional organizations. The American College of Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Association, Washington State Medical Association, American Medical Association and the Clinical Orthopaedic Society are among them. He earned bachelor's, M.B.A and Doctor of Medicine degrees at the University of Washington. Following orthopaedic residencies at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas in Dallas, Texas, he completed a Trauma Fellowship at Technical University of Munich in Munich, Germany.

He began his academic career in 1985 as an assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas before moving back to Seattle, where he is currently a professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Washington. He also maintains an attending position at the university's Harborview Medical Center.

Currently he chairs the AAOS Coding, Coverage and Reimbursement Committee. He is a member of the American Medical Association's CPT Editorial Panel. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Hippocrates-Winslow-Babbage Foundation and has served as President, Chief Financial Officer and Secretary of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.

In addition to publishing over 75 articles and contributing to nearly 50 books, manuals and various multimedia, Dr. Henley currently serves an editor for the CPT ICD-9, Cross Reference for Orthopaedic Surgery and The Complete Global Service Data for Orthopaedic Surgery.

He is a member of the editorial advisory board (trauma section) in Orthopaedics Today and consultant reviewer for Journal of Trauma and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
