MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd.: Mustel Survey Finds Online Filing the Way of the Future for Legal Community

Land Title Electronic Filing System Seen as Convenient, Quicker and Cost Effective

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 21, 2006) - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA) (TSX:MDA) and the Land Titles & Survey Authority (LTSA) today announced the results of a Mustel Group survey whose findings show that the legal community is moving into the digital age to provide faster service for home buyers and sellers.

LTSA and MDA commissioned the Mustel Group to conduct a BC-wide survey of legal practitioners who use the Electronic Filing Service (EFS) which allows for the online filing of Land Title documents through BC OnLine. The survey revealed:

- 96% use online filing for speed and convenience

- 82% use online filing for reduced cost (no courier cost)

- 99% would recommend online filing to other legal professionals

"The reluctance of some members of the legal profession to wholeheartedly embrace this technology is inexplicable," said Ralston S. Alexander, QC, the immediate past president of the Law Society of BC and a member of the Land Title E-filing committee. "The efficiencies and advantages that are introduced into a conveyancing practice by the e-filing regime are astounding - I know of no lawyer who has tried the e-filing system who would then consider reverting to the manual filing system," added Alexander.

The findings show that law firms and notaries use EFS to eliminate courier time, allowing them to serve distant clients and respond to increasingly tight timelines in the real estate industry. The majority of users view electronic filing as the way of the future and find it easier and faster to use than expected. They also find it reduces costs, increases productivity and gives them a competitive edge.

"We were the pilot project for EFS so we are intimately familiar with it, and would never wish to do conveyancing without it. It has also been very helpful in enhancing our firm's productivity and our marketing needs," said Peter Demeo, Lawyer, Mullin Demeo, Victoria.

Users also cited the ability to file from their desk immediately, receive pending numbers and begin payout activity sooner as some additional key reasons for using EFS, which is good news for home buyers and sellers who are involved in one of the most significant purchasing decisions in their lifetimes.

When asked if they would recommend EFS to other legal professionals, almost all (99 per cent) resoundingly said they would. Moreover, 86 per cent said they would prefer to work with other firms that use it.

"We are excited that the survey shows that e-filing of land title documents has come of age," said Darcy Hammett, Director, Strategic Operations for the Land Title and Survey Authority. "E-filing is central to our client service commitment and we are working hard to help the legal community respond to their real estate clients. While some users initially think using EFS is an involved process, the survey indicates that a significant majority of users - close to 94 per cent - register surprise at its speed and ease of use."

Note to editors/reporters

The Mustel Group survey was conducted between November 20 and December 8, 2006. A total of 91 interviews were conducted, including 41 via the web and an additional 50 via telephone, representing approximately 20% of all current users. Margin of error on sample: +/-8% at 95% level of confidence.
