MachineShop Introduces Flexible Security and Authorization Model for IoT Solutions

MachineShop Enhances Market Leading IoT Offering With the Ability to Create Custom Authorizations Across User Bases

DENVER, CO--(Marketwired - Jun 4, 2015) - MachineShop, the API-centric Internet of Things (IoT) platform company, today announced the introduction of an advanced, customizable authorization model based on entity, device or data source assignment. MachineShop's new model allows customers to create custom authorizations across their user base, enabling Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and enterprise customers to maintain complete control over access and permissions through a wide range of authorization models.

"Current IoT platforms in the market have a very rigid user hierarchy, which does not reflect the real-world demands of OEMs and large systems operators that want to have a services-based approach to IoT data source and device authorizations," said Greg Jones, MachineShop CTO. "Our unique approach enables customers to specify very granular and flexible security models in their solutions."

Because MachineShop's offering is 100% services and API-based, customers can apply specific controls in a very granular or atomic way for each class of device or user profile.

As an example, an OEM might have generally distributed devices along with some specialized IoT devices available only to certain customers. These device models can be defined within the MachineShop platform and dynamically assigned to their specific customers using standard API-based services. All authorization and security models will be automatically adjusted to accommodate this structure. This model lets OEMs maintain complete control over the authorizations, while providing maximum flexibility to adjust as requirements change.

This unique level of flexibility and control is only possible because MachineShop's architecture is completely services and API-based. Organizations and their developers are not locked into the rigid schema of a monolithic platform.

A recent article on CIO.com about the challenges facing industrial IoT states, not only that "security is a key issue," but also that "investing in flexibility is crucial." True to this point, MachineShop has invested heavily in providing more options that allow customers to integrate their own security models in solutions that leverage MachineShop's services, providing their customers with the most adaptable, best-of-breed technology.
