Macmillan Announces iclicker's New Demographic Polling and Data Slicing Software

New Pedagogical Tools Allow Instructors to Anonymously Collect Student Demographic Data and Filter Results by Gender, Race and Political Affiliation

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - February 15, 2011) - Classroom discussion and debate can now go deeper with iclicker version 6.0, the latest release of the market-leading iclicker software featuring new demographic polling and data-filtering options. Global publisher Macmillan's new ventures group today announced that its iclicker student response system now offers instructors the ability to anonymously capture student demographic information by selected data such as gender, race or political affiliation.

iclicker version 6.0 opens up different ways for examining content and is perfect for courses in the social sciences and humanities. By allowing instructors to view student responses in a variety of ways, educators can use the new software to go deeper into the contextual and historical issues on even the most taboo questions. For example, an instructor might want to ask a group of 500 students of all races, political affiliations and religions what they really think about gun control, abortion or contraception. With iclicker version 6.0, instructors can now get answers to these sensitive questions broken down by sex, race, or any number of demographic categories and view the responses in class in real time.

"As a professor of Criminal Justice, iclicker's new software allows me to broaden student perspective on sensitive and sometimes difficult concepts beyond a yes/no answer," said Angela Nickoli, assistant professor, Department of Criminal Justice/Criminology, Ball State University. "By giving me the opportunity to slice the demographic data, I can delve into more complicated issues, facilitating a deeper, more personal discussion."

"A large percentage of my students are from affluent areas and many have a fairly narrow view of the world. This software will allow them to think more seriously about their peers' differing perspectives, particularly when broken down by gender and as they relate to socioeconomic status," said Tim Loving, associate professor of Human Development and Family Sciences, University of Texas - Austin.

iclicker version 6.0 is now available in beta and the final release will be ready for Fall 2011 classes. For more information, please visit
