Macquarie Signs on as Title Sponsor of Stampede Sevens Rugby Tournament

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - July 5, 2011) - The Stampede Sevens rugby tournament, held annually during Calgary's Stampede Week, has landed Macquarie Group Canada as title sponsor through 2012. Accordingly, for the next two years it will be known as the Macquarie Stampede Sevens. Macquarie's financial support comes as the event has been designated by Rugby Canada as one of six across the country that will prepare Canada's players for the 2016 summer Olympics.

"Macquarie is a strong supporter of Canadian rugby. Getting them to back this tournament in addition to their other sponsorships is tremendous for us," said Thomas Calvert, Chair of the organizing committee. "As the oldest and largest sevens tournament in Alberta, ours has always been a thrilling event. And now, with Macquarie's support, we'll be able to put on an even better tournament and make deeper connections between our competition and the excitement and traditions of the Calgary Stampede."

With sevens rugby making its debut at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, events like the Macquarie Stampede Sevens have taken on national stature and importance. The tournaments serve as pathways for Canada's national teams to perfect their game as they prepare to compete against the world's best rugby players to own the podium. Macquarie's sponsorship will help cover administrative, insurance, marketing and other costs for the tournament.

"Canada has world-class rugby talent and it's been Macquarie's pleasure to sponsor the sport," said, Earl Evans, CEO and Head of Macquarie Private Wealth Canada. "Supporting this tournament was an easy decision to make: it prepares our players to take on the world, and it taps into the spectacular Calgary Stampede."

Watching the action from the spectator gallery this year will be several high-profile international figures from the world of rugby, including Josh Lewsey MBE, who was a member of England's World Cup-winning team; Richard Smith, who played for Wales; Darren Garforth, who had a successful career on England's national team, and Ryan Smith, a member of the Canadian national team and a contender to play for Canada in this year's World Cup.

The 2011 Macquarie Stampede Sevens rugby tournament will be held at the Calgary Rugby Park on Saturday, July 9; it features 50 teams with players from across Canada, the U.S. and the world. Children under 16 are admitted free and adult tickets are $5. Information is available at
