MADD Canada and NLC Show Students the Aftermath of Impaired Driving

OAKVILLE, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 1, 2014) - Impaired driving takes a disproportionate toll on young people. Continuing education and awareness is crucial to preventing deadly crashes. MADD Canada and Newfoundland Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLC) are proud to once again team up to bring important sober driving messaging to students through the dynamic School Assembly Program.

This year's program, titled Aftermath, began its tour of schools throughout the province in September. A special screening is being held at Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John's on October 3 to highlight this year's program and the provincial sponsorship of NLC.

Media are welcome to attend the launch and speak with special guests, students and school staff.

Date: Friday, October 3, 2014 at 10 a.m.
Location: Prince of Wales Collegiate - 24 Paton Street, St. John's, NL A1B 3E7
Guests: Angeliki Souranis, MADD Canada National President
Steve Winter, NLC President and CEO
Members of MADD Avalon Chapter

Aftermath depicts the fictional story of Charlie, as told by his younger brother Mark. When Charlie decides to drive after drinking and smoking pot - and convinces his best friend Elliott to go with him - the resulting crash leaves a devastating aftermath. Struggling to deal with his feelings, Mark makes a video for Charlie about that terrible decision to drive impaired. The story is followed by emotional and moving interviews with family members of real-life victims of impaired driving. The combination of fictional and real-life stories shows students how one bad decision can have a lasting impact.

NLC is sponsoring 30 presentations of Aftermath throughout the province this year, which is an increase of 5 over last year. In addition to its sponsorship of the School Assembly Program, NLC also supports MADD Canada's mission and programs by hosting 15 charity ATMs in its stores and carrying the MADD Virgin Drinks line of products. A portion of the service fee and sales proceeds, respectively, come to MADD Canada.
