MADD Canada: 'Tis the Season to Plan Ahead for a Sober Ride Home

OAKVILLE, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 20, 2013) - With holiday festivities in full swing, MADD Canada and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada are asking everyone to contribute to a very important gift this year - the gift of a holiday season that is free from impaired driving crashes.

Every year, hundreds of Canadians are killed and thousands are injured because people make the deadly decision to drive impaired. MADD Canada and Allstate Canada encourage Canadians to do all they can to ensure no one becomes a victim of impaired driving this holiday season.

The holidays are an especially difficult time of year for friends and family of impaired driving victims. MADD Canada's National President Angeliki Souranis, whose son Craig was killed in an impairment-related crash in 2008, has mixed emotions during the holidays.

"As I shop for gifts for my family, I think about all the things Craig would have loved, and the special times we shared. I recall the excitement of past Christmas mornings, and the last year with Craig, when he showed me the gifts he had lovingly chosen for his entire family," Ms. Souranis said. "Our family continues to treasure this special time we spend together, but we are always, always, aware that a part of us is missing, and that there is an empty seat at our table."

"At this time of year, Canadians should be enjoying time with family and friends, not facing the devastation of an impaired driving crash," said Allstate Insurance Company of Canada President and Chief Executive Officer John O'Donnell. "If you're going to be drinking this holiday season, leave the driving to someone sober. Let's make sure this holiday season is a safe one for everyone."

Both Ms. Souranis and Mr. O'Donnell encourage everyone to keep the following in mind as they celebrate the holidays with their loved ones.

  • If you're going to be drinking, plan ahead. Take a cab, take a bus, arrange a designated driver or plan to stay over;

  • Don't accept a ride from a driver who may be impaired;

  • If you see a driver who you think might be impaired, call 911.
