When Delta Airlines reported earnings yesterday it said it earned $363 million, or 43 cents per share, in the third quarter. Not counting one-time costs, it would have earned $1.10 per share -- substantially above the 94 cents per share that analysts had forecast. Delta Airlines reported a steep 54 percent year on year boost in revenues from Asian flights. When Delta acquired Northwest Airlines in 2008, they became the largest US to Asia airline.

Also reporting earnings yesterday was US Airways. The company posted net income of $240 million, or $1.22 per share, easily eclipsing consensus Street estimates looking $1.17 per share. During its earnings call, US Airways said it would recall all of its laid off pilots by the end of this year to supplement its international service and expects to hire additional flight attendants early next year.
