Major Work to Set the Stage for New Bridge for the St. Lawrence Corridor Project

Relocation of Hydro-Quebec segment of the Hertel-Viger line

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Jan. 12, 2015) -

Over the next few days, Infrastructure Canada and Hydro-Québec will launch major work in preparation for the new bridge for the St. Lawrence corridor project.

The project will see Hydro-Québec move a segment of the Hertel-Viger line in Brossard that currently runs along and across the site of the new bridge for the St. Lawrence on Montreal's south shore.

In mid January, Hydro-Québec will begin building the foundation for the new towers and will construct and erect the towers and install electrical cables in the spring. The old segment will then be dismantled with work set to be completed in September 2015.

Hydro-Québec will provide coordination in cooperation with the ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) and Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) to limit occasional, temporary traffic obstructions.

Quick facts

  • The project will involve constructing a new line segment, which will comprise eight towers and dismantling the existing line segment.
  • During a public information session held in Brossard last October, Infrastructure Canada and Hydro-Québec informed the public of the scheduled work and the mitigation measures that would be implemented.
  • In addition to creating thousands of jobs in the Greater Montreal area, the new bridge for the St. Lawrence corridor project will also promote economic growth by improving connections across the road system and ensuring the continuous and safe flow of people and goods.
