MAKE Presents Homegrown Drones With First Drone Fly-in at SXSW Create Magazine that Launched the Worldwide Maker Movement Hosts Epic Drone Event

SEBASTOPOL, CA--(Marketwired - Mar 3, 2014) - MAKE magazine and Maker Media, the innovative media company that catapulted making and the maker movement to center stage and took DIY geek culture mainstream, is hosting another unprecedented event at SXSW Create: a family-friendly Drone Fly-in. The weekend event begins on Friday, March 7 and runs through Sunday, March 9, from 11am to 6pm each day at the Long Center in Austin and is free to SXSW attendees and the Austin community.

MAKE will also distribute its current issue, Homegrown Drones, which is also its first issue in its new expanded format and increased frequency to bi-monthly. With over 25 pages on drones, MAKE's new issue features vivid photos and detailed diagrams of the growing number of drone designs from quadcopters to fixed-wing. In addition, MAKE will be selling its most popular drone kits at its booth at the Long Center. MAKE editors who created the content for the drones issue will join other drone teams, including 3D Robotics, at the drone fly-in.

"Maker Media brands' MAKE magazine and Maker Faire are at the forefront of the vibrant and creative community that spawned the global maker movement," said Dale Dougherty, founder and CEO, and publisher of MAKE magazine. "SXSW reflects the maker spirit across a number of fronts, from indie bands and music genres to exciting interactive technologies and eco-projects to important education initiatives."

Local drone hobbyists are welcome to bring their homegrown drones to the Fly-in. They can either contact MAKE in advance at sxsw@makermedia.com or check-in at the MAKE booth to receive credentials and a flight schedule.

In addition to celebrating the meteoric rise of drones, MAKE will use the SXSW Create stage to announce Maker Camp 2014, its free, online summer camp in partnership with Google+. Kids of all ages can participate in hands-on activities, including duct-tape projects, LED pinnies and Makey tattoos, at the MAKE booth at the Long Center.

MAKE will be holding drawings for giveaways of free magazine subscriptions, ipad minis, t-shirts, drone kits and other maker gear.
