Direct Energy Business is launching an Event Greening Program, an easy, cost-effective program which will enable event planners, conference and meeting organizers in Alberta and Ontario to offset the environmental impact of the energy usage at their events by making them carbon neutral.

The Event Greening Program allows event planners and conference organizers to make the energy used at events carbon neutral with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) or carbon offsets equivalent to the amount of electricity or natural gas used at their event. These RECs, which come from EcoLogo(TM) Certified generation facilities, represent proof that one megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from a renewable source-such as wind or low impact hydro,-and delivered into a power grid. Carbon offsets are also generated from emissions-reducing projects. One offset represents the reduction of one tonne of carbon dioxide, or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases.

"Direct Energy Business is committed to developing products and services that help our customers reduce their environmental impact and be more energy efficient," said Graham Leith, Senior Director, Direct Energy Business. "Event planners and conference organizers are now able to hold carbon neutral events. This is not only a good marketing message for the event but the right thing to do for the environment."

Direct Energy Business works with the Direct Energy Centre to create customized programs to provide REC's for trade/consumer shows and events at their facility. Their first customer was the Interior Design Show held at the Direct Energy Centre at Exhibition Place. Organizers of this three-day event purchased enough RECs to offset the equivalent amount of C02 produced by over 6000 Litres of gasoline consumed by a standard family vehicle.

"The Direct Energy Business' Event Greening Program stood out as comprehensive and straight-forward, and fit with our environmental mandate at Exhibition Place," said Laura Purdy Director of Sales & Marketing, Exhibition Place. "Direct Energy Centre at Exhibition Place prides itself on demonstrating to our event organizers, exhibitors and attendees that it is possible to organize a successful event and be environmentally friendly."

As part of the Event Greening Program, Direct Energy Business will assist event organizers and meeting planners to promote their event as supporters of sustainable energy with messaging and branding support, communication with attendees both before and after the event and additional marketing and public relations support.
