Malteurop employees reject Company's last offer

Strike will commence on December 9, Moosehead could be in short supply.

Attention: Agriculture Editor, City Editor, Food/Beverage Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, PRESS RELEASE--(Marketwire - Dec. 8, 2010) - Moosehead drinkers across Canada will have to stock up on their favourite beverage before it's too late. At a meeting Tuesday night, UFCW Local 832 members working at Malteurop overwhelmingly rejected the company's last offer. The union notified the provincial conciliation officer that a strike will start on Thursday, December 9 at 6 am at its 3001 Dugald Road facility.

The 22 plant workers produce malt for beer, most notably the Moosehead brand that is also brewed by UFCW members in Saint John, New Brunswick.

"We've tried to negotiate with the American based employer, spending 14 days at the table, five of which have been with a provincial conciliation officer present and still the company refuses to remove concessions on the member's pension and benefits," stated UFCW Local 832 President Robert Ziegler.

On July 15 the members voted 100 per cent in favour of rejecting the company's offer and 95 per cent in favour of strike action. That prompted both sides to meet again but no progress was made. "Actually the company came back with an offer that we feel was worse than the previous one," stated Ziegler.

There is a slight chance that a strike can be averted, but the union isn't holding out much hope. "The company has made its position clear. We've had a strike mandate since July, and we have exhausted all avenues to avoid a labour dispute but, unless the company removes its concessions, our members will be walking a picket line Thursday morning," said Ziegler.
