Managed IT Services: A Critical Backstop Against Cloud Computing Failure

The Cloud Is Indispensable but Still Prone to Occasional Failure -- and MSPs Can Reduce the Risk

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - Jul 2, 2012) -  Cloud computing is clearly here to stay. Its advantages in ease of maintenance, flexibility and cost savings mean consumers -- businesses in particular -- are transferring more and more functions and data into the cloud instead of storing them through traditional client-server networks.

However, the cloud isn't fail-safe, and a recent report highlights how much cloud failures can cost providers and business clients in time and money -- and how important cloud management is to businesses and their clients.

The report, from the newly formed International Working Group on Cloud Computing Resiliency, estimates that since 2007, 13 of the world's leading cloud services have suffered from a total of 268 hours of downtime, causing a loss of more than $71.7 million.

"That much downtime is unacceptable to business owners, especially the owners of small and medium-sized businesses, which almost always have less margin for error than corporations," said Jeff Connally, president and CEO of CMIT Solutions, a managed service IT provider for small business clients. "It's one of the reasons why our cloud computing managed service package, CMIT Anywhere, is so critical to our clients."

The report represents one of the few assessments of cloud reliability in existence.

"It makes sense for small business owners to turn to other local small business owners like ours for cloud management solutions geared to their needs," Connally said. "With CMIT's world-class support, when a problem does arise, we have the knowledge and skill to get our clients up and running again with minimal loss of productivity."
