Managed Services Firms Find Increased Demand for Security

Survey Shows Increased Offerings, Compliance Reporting on Upswing

BILLERICA, MA--(Marketwire - July 10, 2007) - Managed security has become a critical part of managed services offerings, according to a new survey from SilverBack Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of products and services to manage applications, systems and networks.

"As security attacks continue to escalate from an increasing number of sources, companies are finding it impossible to handle the entire burden themselves, so they're turning to managed security service providers (MSSPs) to help manage the protection of network assets and to provide related services such as remote monitoring and compliance reporting," says John Igoe, Chief Technology Officer, SilverBack Technologies.

SilverBack Technologies recently performed an in-depth survey of 33 IT solution providers who offer managed services to their clients, with questions focusing on the areas of security service offerings.

The results reinforced the importance of security services to end customers. In fact, 85 percent of the providers surveyed offer security services as part of their MSP offerings, and even more (91 percent) have a security specialist on staff.

These solution providers aren't offering security services in isolation, however. In addition to managed security services, the vast majority (97 percent) resell security products, with Cisco (70 percent), Symantec (45 percent), Sonicwall (42 percent) and Veritas (39 percent) brands being the most popular offerings.

Security-oriented managed services are more than just trendy offerings -- they're lucrative additions to the portfolio of a VAR or MSP. SilverBack's survey found that device-oriented security services -- such as managing a firewall -- resulted in monthly fees averaging $215 per device. The majority (82 percent) of survey respondents charge between from $126 to $250 per device per month. No wonder then that all survey respondents expect their security services revenue to increase in 2007.

The most popular anticipated services were compliance reporting, under consideration by 71 percent of the firms, content filtering (53 percent), e-mail security and IDS monitoring/ management (39 percent each).
