Managing WLANs and LANs Together Cuts Network Downtime by 53%

The Rational Network Approach Also Increases Application Response Time by 39%

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - October 14, 2010) - Today Aberdeen Group, a Harte-Hanks Company (NYSE: HHS), released its latest research study on the integration of wireless and wireline networks, "The Rational Network: WLAN and LAN Integration for Ubiquitous Broadband." The study found that top performers that manage their entire network as an integrated whole were able to cut their Wireless LAN (WLAN) and LAN downtime by 53% and 42% respectively, while they improved application response time by 39%.

Whereas WLAN and LAN networks have typically been planned, deployed, managed, and supported as two distinct network initiatives, the "rational network" by contrast takes an integrated approach. By consolidating network planning, deployment, management, support, and security, unnecessary operating expense can be reduced, freeing precious resources that can be redirected to upgrade both the core backbone services and the mobile network edge. Top performing IT organizations deploy 802.11n WLAN pervasively, while ensuring that network is served by a fast wireline core, and that the entire network infrastructure is managed as a core IT asset.

"The momentum to mobilize the network edge seems unstoppable, while the thirst for bandwidth appears unquenchable," said Andrew Borg, senior research analyst, wireless and mobility, Aberdeen. "Our study shows that organizations that plan, deploy, manage, and support their wireless and wireline network assets as a unified IT asset significantly improve network uptime and application response time, while they actually have a lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) per connected user."
