Manitoba Engineers Support University of Manitoba Engineering Students

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Feb. 8, 2010) - Today professional engineers employed by the province of Manitoba will present $20,000 to their union, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) to create an annual scholarship for a first-year engineering student attending the University of Manitoba. The first scholarship award of this kind will be presented to an engineering student today.

Where: Atrium, Engineering & Information Technology Complex, University of Manitoba, Dafoe Road between University Crescent and Saunderson Street, Winnipeg

PIPSC President Gary Corbett will accept the contribution from John
Arthur, head of the Manitoba engineers bargaining group, and present a scholarship to a first-year engineering student, currently studying at the University of Manitoba.

The Professional Institute celebrated its 90th anniversary on February 6, 2010, and has awarded $227,500 in scholarships to dozens of deserving students since 2000.

Some 143 provincial engineers are responsible for design, construction and maintenance of highways, water quality and environmental management, flood prevention, and waste management throughout Manitoba. In 1975, the provincial engineers put their reputation and advancement on the line to form a union for the betterment of future engineers. Prior to 1972, the provincial Labour Relations Act prohibited professionals from joining or forming unions.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is the
largest multi-professional union in Canada, representing some 58,000
professionals and scientists.
