The Manitoba Metis Federation: Final Arguments in Goodon Case No End of Government Harassment

BRANDON, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2007) - Today Metis defendant Mr. Will Goodon entered a Brandon courtroom alongside Metis legal counsel and with Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) President David Chartrand. Final arguments in the Goodon Case may have begun but all indications are that this may not be the last time Metis Harvesters defend their rights in the courts.

"We have recently received notice that Manitoba intends to take nearly two dozen Metis harvesters to court no matter what the decision in the Goodon Case," explained President Chartrand. "Sadly it would appear that justice will be denied. We will need to fight this court battle inch-by-inch and village-by-village across the province."

"These will cost the Metis twice: Firstly as defendants; and, secondly as taxpayers," President Chartrand went on to say. "The MMF is a small government with few resources. Manitoba intends to make this a battle of attrition. The government is trying to bleed us dry in the courts."

"This week we mark the death of Louis Riel - our Metis Leader who led his people in protecting Metis Rights and recognized as a Father of Confederation," President Chartrand went on to say. "It is ironic that his people must continue to fight for our rights to be recognized as an aboriginal people with a distinct culture."

"I ask that Premier Doer bring his government's harassment and persecution of Metis harvesters to an end," said President Chartrand. "If he does not bring his governments regime of fear to a halt, it will not only cost Manitoba millions in wasted taxpayers' dollars, it will also have immeasurable long term impacts on the Metis community."
