Manitobans Impacted by 2011 Flood Invited to Final Set of Public Open Houses

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Sept. 7, 2012) - The 2011 Manitoba Flood Review Task Force and the Lake Manitoba/Lake St. Martin Regulation Review Committee invite Manitobans affected by last year's record flooding to attend one of several public open houses being planned for Winnipeg, Portage la Prairie and the communities around Lake Manitoba of St. Laurent, Fairford, Ashern and Langruth.

The open houses -- scheduled throughout the month of September -- are the last in a series of public open houses being held across Manitoba by the two independent review bodies.

"The 2011 flood had a devastating impact for many Manitoba families, First Nations, businesses and farmers," said Task Force chairperson David Farlinger. "Over the past several months we have had the opportunity to hear directly from Manitobans through five open houses, and via our website. The upcoming open houses will be an important part of our public consultations and as we prepare our final report later this year."

"Though the Task Force and the Committee have different mandates and terms of reference, both are concerned with improving Manitoba's ability to fight floods and manage water," noted Harold Westdal, Chair of the Lake Manitoba/Lake St. Martin Regulation Review Committee. "This month, the open house programs of the Task Force and the Committee are being conducted concurrently to facilitate the opportunity for the public to view material from both initiatives in one venue."

Citizens attending the open houses will be able to meet with Task Force and Review Committee members, and provide feedback to members of one or both groups.

Apart from participating in the open houses, flood-affected Manitobans can also share input via the Task Force and Review Committee web sites at www.2011manitobafloodreviewtaskforce.ca and http://www.lakemanitobalakestmartinregulationreview.ca/. Open house materials will be available online for those unable to attend an open house in person.

The 2011 Manitoba Flood Review Task Force was appointed by the Province of Manitoba to independently examine a range of matters related to last year's historic flood including preparedness and response, flood forecasting, public communications, operation of flood control infrastructure and flood protection.

The Lake Manitoba/Lake St. Martin Regulation Review Committee was appointed to undertake an independent review of the operation of provincial water control structures and water levels on Lake Manitoba, Lake St. Martin and associated waterways.

Additional detail about the scope of work, opportunities for public participation, progress updates and past press releases are available on the Task Force and Review Committee's web sites.
