Mansion for Sale: Virginia Historical Home and Landmark to Sell in Danville Auction

DANVILLE, VA--(Marketwire - July 8, 2010) -  The historic Penn-Wyatt Home in Danville has served as one of Danville's most prominent landmarks since it was built in 1876. And on Thursday, Aug. 12, it will sell at auction, along with the adjacent guest house.

Built by James G. Penn, a prominent local businessman, the historic home still has its original stained and lead glass windows, as well as a unique mosaic front porch, according to Jim Woltz, president of Woltz & Associates, which is marketing the property and will conduct the auction.

"This is just a stunning historic treasure," said Woltz. "It was built at a time when people paid far more attention to detail than they often do today, and it's been periodically restored and expanded into the incredible seven-bedroom home it is today, with more than 8,000 square feet," said Woltz.

Landon R. Wyatt Sr., who served as a Danville city councilman and state senator, purchased the mansion in 1934, and it remained in his family until 1977. In 1979, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, according to Woltz.

The auction will also include the guest house, built as a carriage house by Penn.

"This home has an elegance about it that you just don't see today, with exquisite craftsmanship reflected in the rich wood furnishings, stonework, windows and other features. The fireplaces, floors and doors are all magnificent," said Woltz.

Also selling at auction on Aug. 12 are personal property and antiques from inside the home. The auction of antiques includes three palace size Agra carpets made in India during the Raj period. Many of the items were custom-crafted for the home itself. The personal property auction will begin at 11 a.m., and the auction of the home and guest house will begin at noon.
