Maple Leaf Announces Closure of Warman Road Facility.

Over 660 UFCW Local 832 members will be affected by announcement.

Attention: Agriculture Editor, City Editor, Food/Beverage Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor WINNIPEG, MANITOBA MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - March 18, 2008) - UFCW local 832 negotiating committee were preparing to start negotiating with company officials today for a new collective agreement. Instead they were given notice by Maple Leaf company officials that the Warman Road facility will be closed by the end of September.

The negotiation committee consisting of UFCW Local 832 President Robert Ziegler, Secretary-Treasurer Jeff Traeger and seven members at Warman Road were presented with the difficult news. The company announced that in order to be competitive globally they have to rely on "double shift" plants like the one in Brandon, Manitoba. Company officials stated they tried to find other "value added" work that could go into the facility but they could not come up with a solution to save the plant. They announced that if the right buyer should present themselves they would sell the facility, but stated they wouldn't sell it to their competitors.
UFCW Local 832 President Robert Ziegler expressed his disappointment with the company as the union held proposal meetings and were ready to negotiate a new agreement. Instead the union must now focus its attention on negotiating a severance package for the members.
"This is extremely disappointing to the members at Warman Road. The union will now have to work on an enhanced severance package for the members and assist in finding them new employment."
Company officials will meet with the unions negotiation committee March 19, 25 and 26 and additional dates if necessary to draft an enhanced severance package.
