March Housing Starts for the St. John's Area

ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND and LABRADOR--(Marketwire - April 8, 2011) - Housing starts in the St. John's region increased during the month of March, according to preliminary data(1) released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). March's housing starts totaled 84 units throughout the St. John's area compared to 75 units in March of 2010. There were three additional starts recorded in urban centres outside the St. John's area, for a total of 87 urban housing starts across the province.

"New home construction activity was healthy in March, with starts up 12 per cent," said Chris Janes, senior market analyst with CMHC in Newfoundland and Labrador. "While housing starts have fallen from their recent highs, solid economic and demographic fundamentals have supported the local housing market again this year," added Janes.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in March were up two per cent to 11,655 units compared to last year's total of 11,375. Single-detached starts declined 34 per cent to 3,633 units, while multiple starts increased 37 per cent to 8,022 units in March. In the Atlantic region, 271 new units were started compared to 311 units during March 2010.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on 65 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of high quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes.
