March Housing Starts in New Brunswick

MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - April 8, 2011) - Residential construction in New Brunswick's urban centres was down in March according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data1 indicate that a total of 19 starts were recorded during the month compared to 63 starts for the same period in 2010.

"The decline in residential construction observed in March was mostly the result of reduced activity in the Moncton CMA, as housing starts for the month in both Fredericton and Saint John were comparable to last year," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. Single starts were down 58 per cent in March, with 14 units on record compared to 33 starts during the same month last year. Year-to-date, single starts have declined 34 per cent to 73 units.

In March of this year, multiple starts were down 83 per cent to 5 units. Year-to-date, multiple starts have been limited to 21 units. In comparison, 189 multiple starts were recorded during the same period last year. "Rising vacancy rates in most of New Brunswick's urban centres in 2010 have resulted in fewer multiple starts during the first quarter of this year, contributing to the overall decline in residential construction activity," added Gautreau.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in March were up two per cent to 11,655 units compared to last year's total of 11,375. Single-detached starts were down 34 per cent to 3,633 units, while multiple starts were up 37 per cent to 8,022 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 271 new units were started in March 2011 compared to 311 units during the same period in 2010.
