March is Nutrition Month: Help United Way Stop the Growl

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - March 9, 2016) - What's for dinner? It's the perennial question. But what happens if the cupboards are bare? One in five British Columbians have skipped a meal either because they could not afford food or so that their children could eat. One in three people accessing foodbanks are children.

United Way of the Lower Mainland is helping Stop the Growl by raising awareness about food issues and raising funds for food initiatives. StoptheGrowl.ca is a month long campaign during March, nutrition month, that features 31 healthy, nutritious meals for $15 for a family of four, and tips on how to stretch a food budget. Recipes have been submitted from agencies United Way funds, food writers and bloggers, and local celebrities.

United Way funds 22 food security initiatives across the Lower Mainland through programs like community kitchens and community gardens that provide kids and their families with nutritious food and lifelong knowledge of how to eat well and be healthy. Other programs United Way funds devote 10% of their program budgets to food for program participants.

The average monthly cost of a nutritionally adequate, balanced diet for a family of four in British Columbia is $936. Yet many families in the Lower Mainland aren't able to afford this type of basic nutritious food on a monthly basis.
