Marine Operators Announce Scholarships for Georgian College Students

PENETANGUISHENE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 4, 2008) - Due to an increased demand in the recreational boating industry for qualified employees, the Ontario Marine Operators Association (OMOA) has created $15,000 worth of awards and scholarships for students enrolling in the Mechanical Techniques - Marine Engine Mechanic program for September 2008.

Ten scholarships worth $1,000 each will be available to new students who begin their studies this fall. An additional $5,000 in awards is also available to graduating students.

In recent years the marine industry has experienced a decline in qualified skilled workers. The demand for employees has created new career opportunities for Georgian graduates entering the marine industry. This has prompted Georgian to relocate the program to the new Recreational Boating Centre of Excellence at the Midland Campus. The recently upgraded skilled trades facility features state-of-the-art equipment and educational resources such as computer labs for optimum learning capabilities.

Opportunities for graduating students are abundant within the marine industry, says Al Donaldson, Executive Director of the OMOA.

"For every graduate from the Georgian Marine Engine Mechanic program, approximately 10 job openings are available," said Donaldson. "It has been reported that over the next five years, many marinas expect to lose staff due to retirement; most in the mechanical service departments. In addition, marinas are continuously expanding and growing their businesses to meet the demand of the recreational boaters' needs."

By providing $15,000 in awards and scholarships, OMOA is encouraging students to strongly consider the marine industry as their choice for a fulfilling career. To apply for one of the OMOA entrance scholarships, contact the Awards and Scholarship office at Georgian College at (705) 728-1968, ext 1211.

The OMOA is the largest recreational marine trade association in Canada and acts as the voice of the recreational boating on many strategic issues. Recreational boating contributes over $13 billion to the provincial economy and provides 43,000 jobs. That's why enrolling in the Georgian program can be a viable investment in any student's future.
